'SA failed my drug-mule son who died in jail'

When a young South African drug mule was jailed in Mauritius two years ago, his mother accepted it would be decades before he returned to her Pretoria home.

This week, though, all the mother got back were the ashes of her 32-year-old son, Jan Venter, sentenced to 34 years in prison for trying to smuggle 1500g of heroin.

Cwele granted R100 000 bail

Pietermaritzburg - Sheryl Cwele, the wife of State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele, was granted bail of R100 000 by the KwaZlu-Natal High Court on Friday.

After hearing arguments from Cwele's lawyer and the State prosecutor, Judge Sharmaine Balton said she was satisfied the minister’s wife would not evade trial or interfere with the State witnesses.

Blow for SA inmates in jail abroad

In what could be seen as a major blow for South Africans serving prison sentences abroad, the Pretoria High Court yesterday rejected a mother’s plea for an order compelling the SA government to reconsider her request to enter into a prisoner transfer agreement to have her drug-smuggling son serve the remainder of his prison sentence on home soil.

Sheryl Cwele arrested for drug trafficking

The wife of state security boss Siyabonga Cwele appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg High Court this afternoon on drug trafficking charges.

Sheryl Cwele, a high ranking municipal official on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, was arrested this morning following months of police investigations.
